On this route
Choose Himarë for a slower beach base on a Tirana–Berat–Riviera road trip. Choose Sarandë for ferries, Butrint, Ksamil and a route continuing toward Gjirokastër or Greece.
The two towns are not interchangeable hotel searches. Himarë is the better fit for the central Riviera; Sarandë is the stronger transport and excursion gateway at its southern end.
Sarandë or Himarë at a glance
| Criterion | Himarë | Sarandë |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Beach time, shorter coastal outings, a quieter base | Butrint, Ksamil, Corfu access and southern connections |
| Route fit | After Berat or Vlorë; before returning to Tirana | After Gjirokastër; before Corfu or Greece |
| Without a car | Possible, but local beaches and villages need planning | More excursion choice; summer congestion still matters |
| With a car | Useful for scattered bays; parking can be the constraint | Useful outside town; avoid building every day around Ksamil traffic |
| Nights | Two for one real coast day | Three if combining town, Butrint and a beach day |
Choose Himarë for the self-drive Riviera route
Himarë sits naturally on the route from Berat through the Llogara corridor. Two nights give you one full day to choose a coherent combination—perhaps Potam or Livadhi plus Porto Palermo or a nearby village—rather than spending the day driving to every named beach.
It is not automatically easy without a car. Intercity buses may get you to town, but a timetable that passes a beach is not the same as a frequent local service. Ask the accommodation about the exact stop, last useful return and taxi fallback.
Choose Sarandë for Butrint and onward connections
Sarandë is the practical base when Butrint is a priority, when you want a day around Ksamil, or when a Corfu ferry is part of the itinerary. The National Tourism Agency presents Butrint, the Blue Eye and the city promenade as the surrounding cluster; that broader excursion role is Sarandë's advantage.
The cost is atmosphere and summer friction. A larger resort base provides more services, but peak-season roads and popular beach areas can consume the flexibility you expected. Stay three nights if you want both Butrint and a separate coast day without turning arrival or departure into sightseeing days.
How the choice changes your route
For Tirana → Theth → Berat → coast → Tirana, choose Himarë. It avoids pushing the loop farther south and matches the published 10-day self-drive Albania itinerary. Store itinerary 33 also ends its coast section in Himarë; it explicitly is not a Sarandë/Ksamil route.
For Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → coast, choose Sarandë. Decide whether Berat or Gjirokastër is the more useful inland stop before fixing the coast.
Do not commute between Himarë and Sarandë simply to avoid moving hotels. The coastal road may look short in kilometres, but transfers, stops and summer traffic turn the change into a substantial part of the day. If both matter, move once and allocate at least four coast nights.
Arrival and departure checks
- Confirm the named stop, not just the town.
- Treat online journey durations as dated schedule evidence, not a promise.
- Ask whether large luggage is accepted and where it is stored.
- For a ferry, sleep in Sarandë the previous night rather than relying on a same-day road transfer.
- Keep a taxi number and enough margin for a missed or full bus.
Final verdict
Himarë is the better base for two relaxed Riviera nights inside a central self-drive loop. Sarandë is better for three nights built around Butrint, Ksamil, Corfu or onward travel. Let the next transport leg decide; the wrong base can cost more usable beach time than the hotel saves.
