On this route
Yes, you can travel from Albania’s northern mountains to the Ionian coast in 10 days, but only if you resist turning the trip into a country-wide checklist. The route below uses five distinct bases across six stays, gives Theth and Berat a full non-transfer day, leaves a complete day for the Riviera, and returns to Tirana before departure day. It is designed primarily as a road trip for first-time visitors who are comfortable with mountain roads and one long driving day.
The realistic sequence is Tirana → Shkodër → Theth → Berat → Himarë → Tirana. It deliberately leaves out Valbona, Gjirokastër, Sarandë, Ksamil and Butrint. Those places are worthwhile, but adding them would turn a balanced 10-day itinerary into a chain of early check-outs and late arrivals.

Is 10 days enough for Albania?
Ten days are enough for one coherent north-to-south route, not for “all of Albania.” This plan works because the overnight pattern is simple: one night in Tirana, one in Shkodër, two in Theth, two in Berat, two in Himarë and a final night in Tirana. You get alpine scenery, a UNESCO-listed historic city and the Ionian coast without changing hotels every night.
The trade-off is Day 5, the drive from Theth to Berat. Depending on traffic, stops and where you stay in the Theth valley, budget roughly six to seven hours. Treat it as a transfer day and leave after breakfast. Do not attach a major hike in the morning or a timed museum visit in Berat at the other end.
Albania route at a glance
| Day | Overnight | Main plan | Driving reality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tirana | Arrival and a compact city walk | Airport transfer only |
| 2 | Shkodër | Drive north; Rozafa Castle and old centre | About 2–3 hours plus city traffic |
| 3 | Theth | Qafë e Thorës and Theth village | About 2.5–3.5 hours on winding roads |
| 4 | Theth | Choose one substantial valley hike | No long drive |
| 5 | Berat | Long southbound transfer | Roughly 6–7 hours with breaks |
| 6 | Berat | Castle, Mangalem and Gorica | Park the car |
| 7 | Himarë | Drive to the Riviera; optional scenic stop | About 3.5–5 hours with stops |
| 8 | Himarë | One beach or coastal excursion | Short local drives |

Drive times are planning ranges, not promises. Albanian traffic, roadworks, mountain weather and summer congestion can change them materially. A road-routing check on 10 September 2026 gave a baseline of about 5 hours 40 minutes for Theth–Berat before breaks. The six-to-seven-hour allowance is an editorial planning range, not live traffic information. Confirm the access to your actual guesthouse, as a village-centre route does not cover every accommodation track.
Day-by-day: Tirana to Theth, Berat and the Riviera
Day 1: Arrive in Tirana and keep the plan light
Use the first day to absorb delays. Check in, walk around Skanderbeg Square and choose one nearby sight rather than trying to “complete” Tirana. Bunk’Art 2, the Et’hem Bey Mosque area and the pedestrian lanes around Tirana Castle can fit into a short afternoon, but arrival time should decide the order.
If you are renting a car, consider collecting it on the morning of Day 2. Central Tirana traffic and parking add little value to an arrival evening. Book the first and last Tirana nights separately if that gives you a better airport plan.
Day 2: Tirana to Shkodër
Leave after the morning rush and drive north to Shkodër. Once you have checked in, visit Rozafa Castle while there is still good light, then spend the evening around the pedestrian streets of the old centre. Shkodër is not a token stop: it breaks the journey to Theth and gives you a much calmer mountain departure the next morning.
Do not schedule Rozafa Castle for the first hour after landing on Day 1. Moving it to Day 2 preserves flexibility and avoids a late drive.
Day 3: Shkodër to Theth via Qafë e Thorës
Start early enough to enjoy the road rather than race it. The approach to Theth crosses the high Qafë e Thorës viewpoint before descending into the valley. The official Albanian tourism site describes the pass as the gateway to Theth and highlights the village’s alpine landscape, guesthouses and nearby natural sights.
After check-in, keep the afternoon local: walk to the Church of Theth, explore the village lanes and confirm trail conditions with your guesthouse. Save the longer hike for the next morning. Mountain weather can change quickly, and a late start makes even a moderate outing less forgiving.
Day 4: Theth: choose depth over distance
Choose one main objective. For a moderate valley day, combine Grunas Waterfall with the canyon and return with time to spare. The Blue Eye of Theth is a longer and more demanding outing once the full access and return are counted; it should be an alternative, not an automatic add-on.
Ask locally about trail surface, river conditions and the day’s forecast. Wear proper footwear, carry water and turn back if thunderstorms build. In snow, heavy rain or poor visibility, replace the hike with a slower village day. The point of two nights is to make that decision without feeling that the route has failed.
Day 5: Theth to Berat: the honest transfer day
This is the route’s hardest logistical day. Leave Theth after breakfast, descend through the Shkodër region and continue south. Stop for lunch and fuel before you are tired, then aim to reach Berat in daylight. Current FCDO travel advice warns about variable rural road surfaces, unlit hazards and hazardous driving. Plan this transfer in daylight.
On arrival, do nothing more ambitious than check in and walk along the Osum River. A late dinner with views toward Mangalem is enough. If this long transfer is unsuitable, replace the two Theth nights with one extra night in Shkodër and one extra night in Berat. That keeps nine nights and the coast, but removes the alpine stay.
Day 6: Berat without another check-out
Begin at Berat Castle before the midday heat. The citadel is still inhabited, so allow time for its lanes, viewpoints and the Onufri Iconography Museum rather than treating it as a single monument. Descend to Mangalem, cross to Gorica and leave space for an unhurried evening by the river.
Berat and Gjirokastër share a UNESCO World Heritage inscription for their well-preserved historic centres and vernacular architecture. This itinerary chooses Berat because it sits more naturally between Theth and the central Riviera. Adding Gjirokastër as well would cost either the full Berat day or the coast day.
Day 7: Berat to Himarë
Drive toward Vlorë and the Ionian coast. The modern Llogara Tunnel can shorten the through journey, while the old pass remains the scenic choice when open and conditions are suitable. Decide on the day: use the tunnel if traffic or weather has already consumed your buffer; take the pass only if you have daylight and want the viewpoint.
Continue to Himarë and make it your Riviera base. A stop in Dhërmi can work, but do not also promise yourself a beach hike, a long lunch and sunset at Himara Castle. Check in first; use the remaining light for the waterfront or Old Himarë.
Day 8: One complete Riviera day
Pick one of three styles:
- Rest day: stay close to Himarë and split time between the waterfront, Potam or Livadhi Beach.
- Active day: hike toward Gjipe Beach only after confirming current access, heat and trail conditions; carry water and avoid the hottest hours.
- Coastal road day: visit Porto Palermo Castle and one of Qeparo or Borsh, then return to the same hotel.
Do not combine all three. The coast is where a fast Albania itinerary should finally slow down. Boat trips are weather-dependent; use a licensed operator and check safety equipment before departure.
Day 9: Himarë to Tirana
Have an early swim or breakfast, then return to Tirana. Summer traffic near the coast and the capital can stretch the drive, so avoid a timed evening commitment. Return the car today if that makes the airport morning simpler.
The final Tirana night is not wasted time. It is the buffer that keeps a road delay, puncture or coastal traffic jam from becoming a missed flight.
Day 10: Departure
Leave for the airport with the buffer recommended by your airline and car-rental company. If your flight is late, use the morning for the Tirana sight you skipped on Day 1 rather than adding another city.
Car or public transport?
For a direct comparison of the two nine-night plans, read Albania road trip or public transport: which is better?
A car is the most realistic tool for this exact 10-day sequence. It lets you connect Theth, Berat and Himarë without rebuilding the itinerary around seasonal departures and multiple changes. That does not make driving easy: rural roads can be narrow, mountain bends are tiring and driving after dark is a poor trade.
Public transport works best if you redesign the route. Shkodër–Theth shuttles operate in the main season, and Albania’s official eTransport service provides intercity information, but the difficult links are Theth–Berat and Berat–Himarë. Timetables and pickup points can change, and a missed connection can consume the only full day in a base.
For a route designed around those constraints, use the realistic 10-day Albania route without a car, built around Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër and Himarë.

Best time for this route
Late May to June and September usually offer the best balance: the coast is warm, days are long and the peak summer pressure is lower. Early-season mountain trails can still hold snow or suffer storm damage, so never assume that a calendar date guarantees hiking conditions.
July and August give you the warmest sea but also the greatest heat, busy beaches and slower coastal traffic. Wildfires are a recurring warm-season risk in Albania; follow local instructions and change the route if access is restricted. From late autumn through spring, snow and severe weather can disrupt mountain transport, so this exact Theth-to-Riviera plan should not be sold as a year-round road trip.
Accommodation and booking strategy
Before paying for the rental, confirm that your chosen roads and the final guesthouse access are permitted by the contract. Ask about deposit, excess, tyre and underbody cover, fuel policy, additional drivers and return hours. A small map distance does not establish that an unpaved access track is suitable for the car. Do not add a cross-border detour to this domestic route without checking the separate rental requirements.
- Theth: book a guesthouse with breakfast and dinner if possible, and ask about parking and trail advice.
- Berat: stay within walking distance of Mangalem or Gorica, but confirm vehicle access before following navigation into narrow lanes.
- Himarë: choose between a walkable waterfront stay and a quieter beach base; parking can matter more than a sea-view balcony in high season.
- Tirana: prioritize an easy airport departure on the final night.
Book Theth and the Riviera first for peak summer. Keep cancellation flexibility around the mountain segment, and avoid building the whole trip from non-refundable one-night stays.
Common mistakes and what to skip
- Adding Valbona to the same loop. The classic Theth–Valbona crossing is a hike, not a through-road shortcut for your rental car.
- Driving Theth–Berat after a morning hike. It turns a long transfer into an unsafe late arrival.
- Adding Gjirokastër, Sarandë and Ksamil. Save them for a southern Albania itinerary.
- Treating every beach as a must-see. Choose one coast day that matches the weather and your energy.
- Flying out after driving from Himarë. Keep the final Tirana night.
Who this itinerary suits and who should skip it
This route suits active first-time visitors who want contrast, are comfortable with a mix of one- and two-night stays, can handle a full mountain day and accept one long transfer. It works especially well for couples or friends sharing driving.
It is not ideal for public-transport-only travelers who want fixed, low-risk connections; anyone visiting in winter primarily for hiking; travelers uncomfortable on winding mountain roads; or people who want both the Albanian Alps and every famous stop in the south.
The realistic verdict
A 10-day Albania itinerary can connect Tirana, Shkodër, Theth, Berat and Himarë without feeling reckless. The discipline is in what you leave out: Valbona, Gjirokastër, Sarandë and Ksamil belong to another trip or a longer version. Protect two nights in Theth, two in Berat, two in Himarë and the final Tirana buffer, and the route delivers the contrast promised by the title: Albanian Alps, historic cities and the Riviera, while remaining executable.
