Berat or Gjirokastër: Which Historic Town Should You Choose?

Choose Berat or Gjirokastër by route, transport, walking, season and the time you can actually spend in each historic town.

Choose Berat if you want the easier stop between Tirana and the central or northern Riviera, a compact river setting and a one-night heritage break. Choose Gjirokastër if your route continues to Sarandë, Butrint or the Greek border and you can give its steep old town a fuller day.

Both belong to the same UNESCO World Heritage property, but they solve different itinerary problems. The deciding factor is not which town is “better”; it is which one reduces backtracking while giving you enough usable time after arrival.

Choose Berat for the cleaner central-to-coast route

Berat works naturally after Tirana and before Vlorë or Himarë. Its historic experience is spread across Mangalem, Gorica and the still-inhabited castle district. That lets a one-night stay contain a late-afternoon river walk, an early castle visit and a departure after lunch without pretending you saw everything.

The trade-off is the climb. Berat may look compact on a map, but the castle is well above the river. In summer, take a taxi uphill or visit early, then walk down through the old quarters. With luggage, choose accommodation by access rather than by the prettiest pin inside a pedestrian lane.

Choose Gjirokastër for the southern Albania chain

Gjirokastër fits better between inland Albania and Sarandë. Its castle, old bazaar and stone tower houses form a stronger full-day program, but the old town is steep enough that a late arrival can reduce the visit to dinner and a short walk.

Give it two nights when you want to enter a museum house, explore the castle without rushing and keep weather flexibility. One night can work when transport arrives before mid-afternoon and your next departure is not early.

How the choice changes a ten-day route

On the published self-drive sequence Tirana–Shkodër–Theth–Berat–Himarë, keep Berat. Replacing it with Gjirokastër adds a southern detour and only makes sense if you also move the coast base toward Sarandë. The 10-day Albania mountains-to-Riviera route uses Berat and Himarë for exactly this reason.

For a public-transport route ending around Sarandë, choose Gjirokastër and treat the transfer as a dated booking problem. A previous Gjirafa check showed a direct Berat–Gjirokastër journey on the sampled date, but that is not proof of a daily timetable. Verify operator, station and luggage conditions again.

When both towns fit

Include both only if you have at least two additional nights and the route already continues south. A workable order is Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → Sarandë. Do not squeeze both into consecutive half-days: arrival, hotel access and the climbs consume the time that route maps hide.

If you are choosing the coast next, decide between Sarandë and Himarë before booking this historic stop. That decision often settles Berat versus Gjirokastër automatically.

Final verdict

Pick Berat for a compact heritage stop on a Tirana-to-Himarë or central Albania route. Pick Gjirokastër for a deeper old-town day on the way to Sarandë, Butrint or Greece. If transport is the constraint, choose the town with a confirmed onward departure—not the one with the marginally longer sightseeing list.
