For most car-free travelers, plan Tirana → Shkodër and book a separate Shkodër → Theth shuttle. Choose a direct Tirana–Theth shuttle only when an operator confirms your exact date, pickup point, luggage and arrival. Rent a car when Theth is one leg of a wider self-drive route and you are comfortable with mountain roads.
“Bus to Theth” can describe two different journeys: a through-ticket or vehicle from Tirana, or an intercity bus to Shkodër followed by a seasonal mountain shuttle. Do not treat them as the same service.

The robust public-transport plan: change in Shkodër
Start at Tirana's North and South Bus Terminal and travel to Shkodër. Then use a separately booked Shkodër–Theth shuttle. Build the itinerary around the second leg: operators commonly leave Shkodër in the morning, so a same-day connection from Tirana can fail even when both services operate.
Thethi Travel currently advertises a May–November Shkodër–Bogë–Theth service with an approximate two-hour journey and two departures in each direction. Thethi Bus names Shkodër Tourist Bus Station and the free-parking area in Theth as its endpoints. These are operator pages checked on 11 September 2026, not a national timetable. Reconfirm after entering the exact travel date.
When a direct Tirana–Theth shuttle works
A direct shuttle removes the self-managed change, but verify what “direct” means. Some products collect at a named Tirana point; others combine passengers or change vehicles outside the public-facing itinerary. Ask for the operator name, pickup map pin, planned stops, arrival area and a contact number for the travel day.
Do not publish or rely on one printed departure as a permanent timetable. Mountain services are seasonal and can change with demand, road works or weather. A reservation confirmation for your date is stronger evidence than a generic route page.
When to rent a car
Renting makes sense when Theth is followed by Berat and Himarë and you want to keep the same vehicle for the wider loop. The current Rovefold 10-day route uses that model: Tirana → Shkodër → Theth → Berat → Himarë → Tirana.
The road option is not automatically faster door to door. Add rental collection, inspection, fuel, stops and parking. The existing route's 195-minute Shkodër–Theth figure is a planning estimate, not a live navigation result or road-opening guarantee. Confirm conditions with your accommodation and aim to arrive in daylight.
Reservation and luggage checklist
- Exact travel date and whether the service is operating in that season.
- Operator name and phone or messaging contact.
- Map pin for Tirana, Shkodër and Theth pickup/drop-off.
- Whether the booking is one through journey or two tickets.
- Large backpack or suitcase allowance and any extra charge.
- Cancellation policy for weather or road disruption.
- Latest check-in time and what happens after a delayed first leg.
Fallbacks when the plan breaks
If the Tirana–Shkodër leg is late, stay in Shkodër and take the next confirmed mountain shuttle. If a direct shuttle is cancelled, ask the operator to rebook or refund before buying the two-leg alternative. If mountain conditions are poor, keep Shkodër as the base and move Theth later; do not substitute an unverified private driver at the terminal.
For an out-of-season trip, contact the accommodation before booking the room. A private transfer may be possible, but availability and price are not proof that hiking conditions are suitable.
How this affects the rest of Albania
A car-free Theth visit normally needs a Shkodër night on each side or a very carefully timed return. That changes the number of nights available for Berat and the Riviera. A rental car supports the published mountains-to-Riviera road trip, but the Store itinerary is a self-drive product and should not be sold as the answer to a bus-only plan.
Before choosing the coast, compare Sarandë and Himarë. Himarë fits the self-drive loop; Sarandë changes both distance and onward transport.
Final verdict
Use Shkodër as the reliable planning hinge for a car-free trip. Use a direct shuttle only with a dated confirmation. Rent a car for the wider loop, not merely to avoid one transfer—and keep daylight, road conditions and your own driving confidence in the decision.
