On this route
Kazakhstan rewards travelers who think in regions, not checklists. In ten days, the most convincing first trip combines Almaty, three contrasting landscapes east of the city, and a short finish in Astana. The route below gives Almaty enough time to feel like a place rather than an airport, uses Saty as a practical base for Charyn Canyon, Kaindy Lake and Lower Kolsai Lake, then flies north for a short Astana finish.
This is an independent itinerary for travelers who are comfortable arranging a driver or small-group tour for the national-park section. Road times, park access and domestic schedules can change, so treat every transfer time as an estimate and reconfirm details shortly before departure.
Is this Kazakhstan itinerary right for you?
Choose this route if you want one coherent mountain-and-steppe trip with only three bases: Almaty, Saty and Astana. It works especially well for a first visit, for couples or solo travelers willing to join shared excursions, and for anyone who prefers three focused nature days over daily hotel changes.
It is less suitable if you want a fully rail-based journey, step-free access at every stop, or guaranteed warm weather. Kaindy and Kolsai are high-altitude landscapes, while Charyn is exposed and can feel hot in summer. Keep Charyn on the outbound transfer. Weather and road conditions should decide the order of the two lake visits from Saty.
Route at a glance
- Days 1 to 3: Almaty. Arrive, recover, understand the city center and prepare for the national parks.
- Days 4 to 6: Saty. Travel via Charyn Canyon, then visit Kaindy Lake and Lower Kolsai Lake on separate days.
- Day 7: return to Almaty. Keep the afternoon flexible and protect the next day's flight.
- Days 8 to 10: Astana. Fly north, explore the monumental center and the Ishim riverfront, then depart.
The route deliberately avoids trying to add Turkistan, the Caspian coast or Kyrgyzstan. Those are worthy trips, but they weaken this ten-day plan by adding long transfers and shallow visits.
Day 1: Arrive in Almaty and keep the first evening light
Settle in somewhere central, ideally within easy reach of the metro and the Green Bazaar area. The only essential task today is to recover from the flight and make tomorrow simple. Walk a short neighborhood loop, buy water, test your payment cards and confirm the pickup or meeting point for the Saty section.
Do not schedule a distant viewpoint after a long-haul arrival. Almaty sits close to the mountains, but traffic and fatigue can turn an apparently short outing into a poor start. Save the larger views for a weather-friendly window on Day 3.
Day 2: Read central Almaty through the market and cathedral
Start at Green Bazaar, where produce, dried fruit, dairy, spices and prepared food offer a better introduction than a generic shopping mall. Ask before photographing vendors, keep valuables secure in dense aisles and sample before buying only when invited.
Continue to Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park. Treat the cathedral as an active place of worship: dress respectfully, lower your voice and follow any on-site photography restrictions. The surrounding park and nearby museums make this a compact walking day rather than a transfer-heavy sightseeing circuit.
Use the evening to withdraw some cash for village expenses and reconfirm your driver's vehicle, departure time, luggage allowance and whether park fees are included.
Day 3: Keep Almaty flexible for mountains, museums or cafés
This buffer day makes the itinerary resilient. In clear conditions, consider an upper-city viewpoint or a mountain-edge excursion such as Medeu, using official transport information or a reputable local operator. If clouds or rain hide the mountains, stay in the city and choose a museum, café district or a longer walk through the central parks.
Pack a small overnight bag for Saty and leave nonessential luggage in Almaty if your accommodation permits. Bring layers, sun protection, a refillable bottle, any personal medication and footwear with grip. The official park route to Kaindy follows an unpaved approach with river crossings and exposed stones before the walking section. Confirm current access and vehicle arrangements locally.
Day 4: Almaty to Charyn Canyon, then Saty
Leave early with a prearranged driver or organized group. The practical sequence is Almaty to Charyn Canyon to Saty, because it avoids repeating the long eastern approach. Drive times vary with traffic, road works, stops and the exact canyon entrance, so budget most of the day.
At Charyn, focus on the Valley of Castles. The canyon is exposed, with limited shade and a noticeable climb back from lower viewpoints. Carry water, wear sun protection and turn around before heat or fatigue becomes a problem. Strong wind, ice or summer heat can change what is sensible.
Continue to Saty for a guesthouse dinner and an early night. Confirm the order of Kaindy and Kolsai with your host or driver based on the latest road and weather conditions.
Day 5: Kaindy Lake and its submerged forest
Kaindy is visually distinctive because trunks rise from the lake, but reaching it is part of the experience. The official park route follows an unpaved approach with two river crossings and exposed stones before the walking section. Access arrangements can change, so confirm the vehicle, price and meeting point locally before setting out.
Move slowly near the water, stay on established paths and avoid creating shortcuts on fragile slopes. The lake is high enough for rapid weather changes, so carry a warm layer even when Saty starts sunny. Return to the same guesthouse rather than adding another hotel change.
Day 6: Lower Kolsai Lake, with an optional longer hike
Spend the day at Lower Kolsai Lake. A relaxed traveler can walk the shore, picnic responsibly and return to Saty without treating the visit as a race. Strong hikers may consider continuing toward Middle Kolsai only if time, weather, park rules and daylight all align.
The longer trail is not a casual add-on. The park publishes a route toward Middle Kolsai, but that route listing is not same-day access clearance. Ask park staff to assess it against your fitness and the current conditions, carry enough water and turn back early. Swimming, fires, waste disposal and access rules should follow current park instructions.
Day 7: Saty to Almaty with an uncommitted afternoon
Return to Almaty after breakfast. Keep the afternoon intentionally unbooked because rural pickup times, road works and traffic are variable. If you arrive early, revisit a favorite neighborhood, have a proper meal and repack. If you arrive late, the itinerary still works because there is no same-day flight to protect.
Check in for tomorrow's domestic flight when the airline allows it and verify which Almaty airport terminal is shown on your booking. Keep passport details consistent with the ticket and review the fare's baggage allowance rather than assuming every domestic fare includes the same luggage.
Day 8: Fly from Almaty to Astana
A domestic flight is the efficient choice for this ten-day route. The train can be rewarding, but it uses a much larger portion of the itinerary. Search the official railway ticket site if you actively prefer an overnight rail journey, and compare it with current flight timings before committing.
After arriving in Astana, check in and take a short orientation walk. Group nearby landmarks rather than crossing the city repeatedly, and keep an indoor fallback for uncomfortable weather. Use licensed taxis or the local transport options recommended by your accommodation.
Day 9: Astana's monumental center and Ishim riverfront
Begin around the central axis and Bayterek area, then continue at a pace that suits the weather. Astana's scale, modern architecture and planned vistas create a strong contrast with Almaty and the villages near Kolsai. Allow time indoors if wind, heat or cold makes long exterior walks uncomfortable.
Later, walk a section of the Ishim riverfront. Choose one or two major interiors rather than collecting every landmark. Opening hours and access rules can change for civic and religious buildings, so check the official venue page on the day.
Day 10: Depart Astana without squeezing in another region
Leave a sensible airport buffer and use the morning only for a nearby breakfast or short walk. Astana traffic, weather and airport procedures are not good reasons to gamble with the final transfer. If your flight departs late, store luggage with your accommodation and remain within an easy return.
Transport reality
Almaty, Charyn, Kaindy and Kolsai
The national-park section is the least predictable part of the route. A private driver gives flexibility, while a small-group tour can reduce cost. Before paying, confirm the full route, overnight arrangement, included meals, park fees, local vehicle costs for Kaindy, cancellation terms and whether the driver returns you to Almaty on Day 7.
Public transport can reach parts of the region, but it is not the strongest foundation for a fixed ten-day editorial route. The official tourism portal places Kaindy and Kolsai in the same national park and identifies Saty as their gateway. That does not guarantee a convenient daily public schedule.
Almaty to Astana
Fly when time matters. Take the train only if the rail journey is one of your trip priorities and you are prepared to exchange a sightseeing day for it. Buy rail tickets through the official Kazakhstan Temir Zholy ticket website and airline tickets through the airline or a trusted booking channel. Never rely on a screenshot of an old timetable.
When to go
Our preference is a late-spring to early-autumn trip, subject to current access. Conditions differ between the city, canyon and mountain lakes. Summer can be hot at Charyn and cool or stormy near Kolsai. Shoulder seasons may bring snow, mud, closures or rougher access. Ask your accommodation or operator for conditions a few days before the park section.
Pack layers that work across the city, exposed canyon and mountain-lake environments rather than dressing only for the conditions you meet on arrival.
